Trinidad scores majority decision to add WBC belt to his IBF title
Saturday night's welterweight title bout in Las Vegas didn't quite live up to the 1981 Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns bout that it was being compared to, but it did end with a surprising twist. IBF welterweight champion Felix Trinidad came back near the end of the fight to score a majority decision over WBC champ Oscar De La Hoya to add another belt to his stable. De La Hoya grew complacent in the final four rounds, choosing to run from Trinidad to avoid taking a big punch. Trinidad's majority decision threw Puerto Rico into a fit of nationalistic pride, as they celebrated the triumph of Trinidad throughout the island nation |
